My take on the debate ( Full disclosure - Independant -leaning Obama - donated money to both campaigns) is that Mccain was very stuck in the ways of the past. I was not sure whether Reagan was running again for President or Mccain was as Reagan's name was invoked so many times. Unfortunately the "dead-man's" hand is not going to help the Republican Senator.
I think Reagan was a great President for most part (except for sleeping @work and the Iran-Contra). However, what we did was what was needed THEN. We need new ideas now.
I admire Mccain for showing the sense of patriotism, trustworthiness (he is passionate about Veteran affairs, Iraq etc). However, by doing that he is just tying himself to some really old ideas.
I thought Mccain wants to live in the past - not take the past experience and make new decisions for the new world we face (Did any of you read the fact that Chinese have people walking in Space this morning).
I thought both of them did terrible with the economy question. Unlike the popular sentiment as to why bailouts are needed - I clearly understand that we have to bailout the current mess that these investment banks created (or financial institutions will completely collapse - we can't borrow money and we are all SCREWED - Replublican or democrat or Conservative or Liberal.
Key things that i think Obama should have hammered Mccain On
- Reagan with due respect Senator Mccain was given a different set of challenges -the challenges facing us are different.
-Ask folks in Iraq to fund US Army ( We are wasting billions of dollars - which ALONE would have averted this financial mess) from their 79 billion petro-dollars and clearly setup a time to get out -so we can go full force in Afghanistan and get rid of all the Taliban/Al Quaeda.
- We made Iran what it is today - we just helped them by removing the one guy that actually was doing some checkmating - in my mind pretty f***ed up strategy with a terrible timing. Senator you were part of that decision.
- Surge is absolutely working - no question - but we can't keep on staying there -we have other priorities -including here in homeland - where our economy is close to being in garbage can.
- Senator Mccain - while your 26 years of experience is worthwhile - I think learning from the past is better than living in the past. You want to live in the past with Reagan -please do - this country needs to move FORWARD - not backward.
